Statement
We propose to study extreme forms of video art. Videos shown at the festival are at the intersection of bad art, bad painting and bad cinema but still have not been introduced as an independent category for profound studying. As the issues of quality and boundaries of art are of topical interest, it is necessary to single out certain video art works as bad videos or “B-videos”.
When we call something “bad” and show it, we begin a funny game, which is impossible to lose. The viewer may not like what he sees but he won’t be deceived. Indeed, he has never been promised anything good, on the contrary, he was warned not to count on anything. This is not Louvre, he was told. What Venera? She is not here.
No points or prizes. In this game we are not competing with each other, not trying to surprise, build hype or create trends. We just show bad video art from al over the world, because it really exists in this world. And there are artists self-confident and fearless enough to take part in our festival. They are not afraid of labels or disrepute. Our festival is a good example of successful international communication beyond any geographical, social or cultural limits, or fictional ranking.
Bad video art holds a unique position. It is not for sale, doesn’t fit the art history, is not trying to prove anything or convince anybody of anything, doesn’t fight anything.
It is just there, and that’s enough. The hashtag #bad protects it from envy or competition, and opens in front of it the hearts of people who are eager to get to know something else.
It is the desire for something else that still motivates us to do something in this world, and continue our mortal existence. And we hope that bad video art becomes our faithful and constant companion.
Bio
The International Bad Video Art Festival was organised by two artists: Natalia Monakhova & Andrey Slaschilin. The 1st Festival took place at the A3 Gallery, Moscow, in March 2017. More than 80 artists from 30 countries, including Russia, USA, Canada, Brazil, RSA, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, France, China, India, Indonesia, Norway etc., took part in the festival.
The second edition of the Festival is planned for April 2018.
